Scrutinizing of Structure and Design of Hybrid Electric Vehicle Transmissions

The concept of hybrid electric vehicle has a wider scope but in the strict sense it defines vehicles in which both internal combustion engine and electric motor are used. The emission amount and fuel consumption of hybrid electric vehicles are quite low when compared to conventional fossil fuel vehicles; hybrids have higher efficiency. Hybrid transmissions, to which engine and motor powers are transferred, are one of the basic components that ensure the formation of these benefits. Transmissions in full and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles can be grouped under two main headings. The first of these is the P2 structure, which is used in parallel hybrid electric vehicles, where the electric motor is positioned in front of the transmission. The other main topic is power split hybrid transmissions used in hybrid vehicles with serial-parallel or complex powertrain configurations. In the P2 structure, the transmission can be used exactly with partial modification. The link between the engine and motor can be broken mechanically. The vehicle can be driven by an electric motor only. The main component of the power split hybrid structure is the planetary gear unit that distributes the power from the ICE; for this reason it is called power split. The transmissions is basically in the form of an integrated structure of electric motor and planetary gear mechanisms. Mechanical power can be transferred directly to the wheels via gears or converted into electricity to be stored in a battery or the electricity drawn from the battery can be transferred to the drive wheels via the power distribution unit. In this study, hybrid electric vehicle transmissions whose usage is increasing day by day and which are expected to have a significant share in the automotive sector in the medium term are scrutinized.
